Common discounts cheat sheet
| Discount | Multiply by | Example on $100 |
|---|---|---|
| −10% | 0.90 | $90 |
| −20% | 0.80 | $80 |
| −30% | 0.70 | $70 |
| −50% | 0.50 | $50 |
| −70% | 0.30 | $30 |
| −20% then −20% | 0.64 | $64 (not $60) |
Anti-fake-deal reflex: use “Price → discount” mode with the crossed-out and displayed prices. If the “big promo” comes out at −7%, you know what you are dealing with.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate 30% off?
Multiply the price by 0.70 (that is, 1 − 30/100): an $80 item at −30% costs 80 × 0.70 = $56, saving $24. The tool applies this formula live.
How do I find the percentage between two prices?
Switch to “Price → discount” mode: the formula is (1 − price after ÷ price before) × 100. From $80 to $56, the discount is (1 − 56/80) × 100 = 30%.
Do two 20% discounts make 40%?
No: they multiply. −20% then −20% = 0.8 × 0.8 = 0.64, i.e. −36% overall. Apply the first discount, then use the resulting price as the new starting price.
Is the discount applied before or after tax?
In shops, displayed prices include tax: the discount applies directly to them. Between businesses (pre-tax prices), apply the discount first, then the tax — the order does not change the total anyway.
