Plan your knitting from the gauge
Enter the stitches and rows measured over 10 cm, then the width and height you want: the tool gives the stitches to cast on and rows to knit.
The method
- Stitches = (sts/10 cm) × width
- Rows = (rows/10 cm) × height
- Always block the swatch before measuring
- Re-swatch if you change needle size
Example

Frequently asked questions
How do I make a swatch?
Knit a square and count the stitches and rows over 10 cm in the centre. That is your gauge.
How are cast-on stitches calculated?
Stitches = (stitches per 10 cm ÷ 10) × target width in cm. E.g. 22 sts/10 cm × 50 cm = 110 stitches.
Why is my garment the wrong size?
Usually the swatch was skipped: change needle size until you match the pattern’s gauge.
What about rows?
Rows = (rows per 10 cm ÷ 10) × target height in cm.
