Frequently asked questions

How is the time computed for my city?

The tool first computes the UTC time of sunrise and sunset with the NOAA algorithm (latitude, longitude, date), then converts it to the chosen city’s time zone — daylight saving included. For custom coordinates, the time is shown in your local zone.

Why is day length 12 h at the equinoxes?

At the equinoxes (around 20 March and 23 September), the Sun crosses the celestial equator: it lights both hemispheres equally, and everywhere on Earth the day lasts about 12 hours. It is the only time when latitude barely matters.

What are polar day and night?

Beyond the polar circles (66.5° latitude), the Sun can stay below the horizon for days (polar night) or permanently above it (polar day, or midnight sun). The tool detects this and reports it instead of a time.

How accurate is the result?

The NOAA algorithm is accurate to about a minute at moderate latitudes. Atmospheric refraction, altitude and local terrain can shift the actual moment by a few minutes — a mountain horizon brings sunset forward.
