Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between public and private IP?

The public IP is the address the outside world sees — your router’s address on the Internet. The private IP (192.168.x.x…) only exists inside your local network. This tool shows your public IP.

Why do I see an IPv4 and sometimes an IPv6?

IPv4 (e.g. 203.0.113.5) is the historic format, running out; IPv6 (long, with “:”) is its successor. Depending on your provider, you may have both. The tool shows IPv6 if available.

Does my IP reveal my exact location?

It gives an approximate location (country, region, sometimes city) and your ISP, but not your postal address. To hide your IP, use a VPN or the Tor network.

Is my data sent anywhere?

Only a request to the public ipify API is made to learn your own IP. The other details (time zone, language, system, screen) are read locally by the browser and never transmitted.
