Reference frequencies (A4 = 440 Hz)
| Note | Frequency |
|---|---|
| A2 | 110 Hz |
| A3 | 220 Hz |
| A4 (reference A) | 440 Hz |
| A5 | 880 Hz |
Each octave doubles the frequency. The mic is never recorded: analysis is local and in real time.
Frequently asked questions
How does the tuner detect the note?
The mic captures the sound, which the tool analyses by autocorrelation to find the fundamental frequency. That frequency is then converted into the nearest note and the deviation, expressed in cents.
What are “cents”?
A cent is one hundredth of a semitone: a semitone is 100 cents. A 0-cent deviation means you are perfectly in tune; beyond ±5 cents, the ear starts to perceive the pitch error.
Why adjust the A4 reference?
The modern standard sets A4 to 440 Hz, but some ensembles play at 442 or 443 Hz, and baroque music often at 415 Hz. Adjusting the reference tunes the whole instrument accordingly.
Is the mic sound recorded?
No. The analysis happens in real time in your browser; no sound is recorded or sent. The mic permission only reads the signal while the tuner is active.
