Frequently asked questions
Where do the offered voices come from?
They are the voices installed on your operating system and browser, exposed by the Web Speech API. The list therefore varies by device; some voices need a connection, others work offline.
Is the text sent to a server?
Synthesis is handled by the browser via the SpeechSynthesis API. Depending on the chosen voice, processing may be local or delegated to the system engine; the tool itself neither sends nor stores your text.
How do I get a natural read?
Keep the rate around 1 and the pitch at 1 for a neutral result. Slightly lower the rate for technical text, raise it to skim. A voice native to the text’s language gives the best pronunciation.
Why is the voice list sometimes empty?
Voices load asynchronously: on some browsers they appear a fraction of a second after opening. The tool listens for the load event and fills the list as soon as it is available.
