The Chinese sign is based on the Gregorian year; for a January–February birth, the Chinese New Year year may differ.

Two zodiacs, one date of birth

The West reads the stars by month, China by year. This tool gives both at once: your Western sign with its element (fire, earth, air, water) and your Chinese sign (animal of the 12-year cycle + element of the 5-year cycle). Take it as a cultural game, not a prediction.

The Chinese sign is based on the Gregorian year. For a birth in January or early February, check the Chinese New Year date of your year: the real animal may be that of the previous year.

Frequently asked questions

How is my Western sign determined?

By your day and month of birth, following the twelve periods of the tropical zodiac (Aries from 21 March to 19 April, etc.). Each sign is tied to one of four elements: fire, earth, air or water, which group the signs by supposed temperament.

How does the Chinese sign work?

The Chinese zodiac follows a 12-animal cycle (Rat, Ox, Tiger…) over 12 years, combined with a 5-element cycle (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water) over 10 years. The full combination repeats every 60 years: for example 2020 was the year of the Metal Rat.

Why a warning for January–February?

Chinese New Year falls between late January and mid-February, not on 1 January. This tool uses the Gregorian year; for a birth before Chinese New Year, the real animal is that of the previous year. Check your year’s exact date.

Is astrology a science?

No: no study has shown a link between the positions of the stars at birth and personality or destiny. The zodiac is a fascinating cultural and playful object, which this tool presents as such — not as a prediction.
